Being a bride or groom comes with the unenviable task of choosing a wedding photographer. This can be rather daunting and slightly terrifying. After all, it’s a big deal. There are no re-dos, make-over’s or second chances, these photographs are going to be your permanent reminder of the happiest day of your lives! You’re spending a lot of money, and you’re putting all your faith in someone without being able to see the final product in advance. That is always going to be scary!
I always try to put myself in my clients’ shoes when meeting with them to talk about their wedding photography needs. I’m always honest about what they should look for when choosing a wedding photographer too. Finding the perfect person to shoot a wedding is hard and is made up of SO many different factors so I try to make this as easy as possible by being honest and open. So, from my view as a photographer, I thought I’d share a few helpful tips on making this huge decision. I know it may seem that I’m a little biased (pick me! pick me!) but I honestly don’t think every bride and groom out there is right for me or I for them. So how do you find the best wedding photographer for you?
Make sure that when you look at their photographs, you FEEL something
You’re hiring an artist (sorry to sound big-headed). That means you’re going to get your ‘artists’ unique take on everything. You’re going to see your wedding again through their eyes and therefore it’s really important that you feel an emotion of some sort when you view their photographs! You will always feel emotion when you view your own wedding photographs. However, being truly happy with them can only be guaranteed from understanding your photographers’ vision. Then being moved by how they’ve told someone else’s wedding story.
Ask to view an entire wedding worth of photos
All wedding photographers (myself included) can show you some exceptional examples of their work. However, not every photo is an award-winning ‘showstopper’ and it’s important to see what your photographer captures throughout the whole day. You want to make sure they have good quality photographs throughout the course of one entire wedding.
Make sure you like them as a person
In my mind, this is hands down the most important thing when you’re hiring a wedding photographer. You must get on! It really is difficult to understand until you’ve been married how much time you will spend with this stranger who is telling your wedding story. You will be in eyeshot of your photographer for the majority if not all of your wedding day. If you don’t like them or you haven’t got anything to talk about with them, it’s going to make your day less enjoyable. Ultimately the most important thing to me and hopefully every other wedding photographer is that your wedding day is the happiest of your life. If you make your choice for a photographer based on the above advice, you will increase your chances of being thrilled with the photographs from this once-in-a-lifetime special day.
